Last night, thousands of people tuned in to the 84th Annual Academy Awards. The glitz, the glamour, and scores of actors, actresses, and celebrities occupied the red carpet. Even though that there was a lot of buzz about who should win for each category (congratulations to Octavia Spencer for winning Best Supporting Actress!), the natural hair world focused on Viola Davis. The Oscar-nominated actress for her role of Aibileen Clark in the movie The Help was breathtaking in her emerald green Vera Wang gown and, yes, her fabulously chic natural pixie cut. She looked beautifully radiant as she...

Mara Hoffman’s 2012 Resort Swimsuit Lookbook features Sudanese model, Nykhor Paul. Mara bohemian style is deeply influenced by different cultures. For this campaign in particular she tapped into the beautiful caribbean habitat of Cuba. Mara always includes elements from his travels, this year the Egyptian mystical culture & Mexico we’re part of it, and off course as always Tribal is one of the main source for her inspirations. The designer’s idea behind the shoot “something rich with ceremony and sexy yin witchery, pulling references from Cuban and Caribbean environments.” The...

Amazones, a project born in 2001 between PACO “Iron Man” RABANNE and photographer, Thierry Le Gouès, is a collection of reflections with the light and metal and skin that sparks concepts of futuristic imagery. Thierry “armed” the Amazones with the Paco’s creations for an imaginative set of shoots on the volcanic island of Lanzarote, cliffs of Etretat, Brazilian beaches of Nordeste, the desert of the Sahara. In union and homage to his first book “Soul” (first published in 1998,) Thierry Le Gouès’ Amazones are rising generation of black fashion divas: Nina Keita, Kadija,...

BlackGirlsKillingIt (BGKI) is the brainchild of Neil Alvin. Its an extraordinary Tumblr blog featuring images of well-dressed, impeccably-styled black women. Periodically, BGKI features an interview with a sista whose personal style is unique and fabulous. In this post, BGKI interviews Folake Kuye Huntoon, editor of StylePantry.com, the “fashion and lifestyle stockiest.” How would you define your personal style? I’d say it’s Three’s company meets Woodstock meets Today’s fashion! Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules? I have always played...

BleuRose kept saying how cold it was! Grinning from ear to ear, playfully strutting like a peacock, she appeared to be basking in the sun but she was not kidding. It was really cool out. Although the sun shined brightly, it was early in the day, air was dry and while the wind was comforting, the sun heat was not with us at that time. And even know she talked about it, the earthSista never complained. BleuRose’s spirits were high as always (I’ve yet to see this sista face challenge with anything less than positive attitude.) The earthSista’s lighthearted nature was infectious and...

SirReal Photography presents Signature: blax·ploi·ta·tion A genre of American film of the 1970s featuring African-American actors in lead roles and often having antiestablishment plots, frequently criticized for stereotypical characterization and glorification of violence. Gordon Parks described his blaxploitation projects as “a picture people go to see because they want to see the black guy winning.” Being a late 80’s baby, I always found it quite difficult to understand the Black community’s attraction to blaxploitation films let alone the term. But growing as a Black artist has...

Last month Anthony Hamilton let it happen. He dropped…Back to Love. Here’s what a few folks had to say… Odeisel from planetill.com: Back To Love is a well-rounded Anthony Hamilton with a little swagger added and less of the weight of the world on his shoulders. It’s house cleaning reality music, full of emotion, delivered by a guy that could sing. Evan Rytlewski from the www.avclub.com: With his fifth album, Back To Love, Anthony Hamilton becomes the latest neo-soul veteran to outdo himself. Where Hamilton’s past albums have lured in listeners with their slow, sensual pull,...

Today we mourn the passing of “Soul Train” host Don Cornelius. His smooth baritone seduced millions for years while celebrating black music and its artists. He bestowed “love, peace and SOUL!” upon so many of us; it is so unfortunate that such happiness had escaped his grasp in recent years. Plagued with marital issues and ill-health, Don was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot on Wednesday, February 1. Cornelius was 75. Aretha Franklin called him “an American treasure.” “God bless him for the solid, good and wholesome foundation he provided for young...
