Honestly, is that proverb really true? The Baobab tree truly is a source of inspiration. Its generous spirit and life-giving properties has been renowned in stories told for centuries. The Baobab is one of the longest living trees in the world. Native to the dry plains of Central Africa, where its considered by many to be the dwelling place of departed spirits, the baobab has been used as a source of water by some and a home by others. Looking like trees that have been planted upside down these uniquely iconic symbols of long life inspired earthSista MoEss and artists Maurice Evans and Grace...

TTColes “It was Sunday and I had the pleasure of joining freedom fighter, Kalonji Changa and his crew in a concerted effort to nourish the bodies and souls of hundreds of hungry Atlantans. I was grateful and humbled to be in the presence of such wonderful brothers and sisters that willfully donate their time (at least) two times a month to prepare food and clothing to serve some of the less fortunate that dwell in the city. As the founder/director of The FTP Movement, Kalonji developed missions such as Feed The People, MOBB (Mothers of Black and Brown Babies), and Siafu Youth Group. (Kalonji...

Having engaged subjects as diverse as black women’s rights, spirituality, African-American liberation and African culture, my work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. Often times these themes are combined into visual feminine elements that feature surreal and abstract backgrounds, juxtaposed with symbolic spiritual images, and often embellished with...

“I am an aspiring model, building my portfolio and getting started in this business.” That is an up-to-date paraphrase by Debbra Ruth. The 25-year old has been on this journey through the modeling industry, finding her place in it. At 5′6″ and curvy, Debbra does not fit the stereotypical fashion model aesthetic and she does not pretend to. She says her style is “lil afrocentric and classy with a lil bit of funk.” Her captures reveal that she does not shy away from being daring and provocative. She says she is open to all different styles. I was impressed...

Solanjel About three months ago, I had the opportunity to do a photoshoot with one of my friends. It was a perfect suggestion, seeing as how I love posing in front of the camera and she had just bought a new camera and was looking to get back into photography. After doing a couple photoshoots, I sat down with Ashley Donald for a brief Q&A about her photography and her “roots”. How did you get interested in photography? I’ve always been interested in visual arts and photography is a way to capture life…I mean, life is amazing and when you take pictures you get to share your...
